On February 14,2018 Nikolas Cruz opened fire at his previous high school Marjory Douglas High School. Nikolas attended this high school only a year prior. While Cruz opened fire on the school the school officer, Scot Peterson, stood by and did nothing. Peterson who had more than thirty years of experience stood outside and did nothing while seventeen people died. I recieved this information from the article i have linked below. While talking about this shooting in my Criminalistics class which is taught my Professor Sherwin, who also has much experience as he worked for the Chicago Police Department before he began teaching. Sherwin said that he would have went into the building without hesitation. Sherwin said that he has much more experience than a nineteen-year-old and that by not going into the building Peterson allowed more people to die than should have if he would have went inside. I agree with the statements that Sherwin makes because if Peterson would have gone into the school less people could have been injured or killed.

The Hunting Ground Summary

The Hunting Ground is a documentary directed by Kirby Dick that exposes universities for covering up and ignoring sexual assault reports. Kirby talks to many different women from different universities all around the United States, these women share their stories of University administrators covering up their report and making sure it stays off the records. It is said in the documentary that university administrators first job is is to protect the school and it is shown in the documentary thats exactly what they do.

Comparing Two Universities Sexual Assault Information

While the documentary The Hunting Ground talked about larger universities I wanted to compare two universities that are small and large. For the small school I chose Lewis University and for the large school I chose University of North Carolina, the reason I chose UNC was because in the documentary it was the first university to have students stand up against the university. When looking at the Lewis University website (that is linked below) it had a large amount of information including what is classified as each type of sexual misconduct. The Lewis University website explains everything in detail so anyone can understand the differences and every thing can be processed and filed correctly. The website for Lewis University also has outside and on-campus resources listed to help anyone and they even have specifics for Title IX and someone who handles Title IX specifically. The website goes though the steps that will then be taken after a report is made and also what may happen to the accused.
Lewis University Sexual Misconduct Policy for Students

Looking at the University of North Carolina website(linked below)it was completely different then the Lewis University it is very short and only really tells you where to go in order to report. This was surprising to me because of how often people report that UNC did nothing when they reported sexual assault. Comparing these two universities shows how much they really care about their students knowing the process about reporting sexual assault and what will happen after they report.

The Hunting Ground

1. A scene that really got to me was a scene towards the beginning with the Harvard Law student. Kamilah Willingham was sexually assaulted by a fellow student at Harvard that she called her friend. He assaulted her and her friend after a night of drinking, and Kamilah tells the story of that night and how when she started to wake up the man was on top of her and her friend was next to them on the bed naked and unconscious. This story angers me because the school did wrong by Kamilah. During the disciplinary hearing that Harvard conducted the man was guilty of assaulting Kamilah and he was expelled. The next September Kamilah got a Facebook message from the Dean of Students at Harvard. When talking to the Dean of Students Kamilah was told that he could appell the decision that was made and they had to vote on whether to uphold the decision to remove him, and ended up letting the man back in. When he appealed the school had no intention of letting Kamilah know and by doing that the set a statement saying they don't care about her or what he did, they just wanted to keep sexual assault statistics down for them.

2. What surprised me during this film was the statistics used to help tell the story. Also going along with the statistics was that universities are afraid of false reporting. When data shows that the percentage of false reporting is somewhere between 2-8%, which means that 92-98% of the reports are not false. Yet most universities believe that women come to them constantly about sexual assaults that they think are fake.

3. One thing that lingers with me is when will this end, when will all sexual assaults that land on an administrators desk be taken seriously. When will administrators stop worrying about statistics and their prospective student view of the safety of the school and start worrying about the students that go there now and protect them instead of ignoring them like they've been doing.

4.One problematic things that I can see have mostly to do with the statistics used throughout the film. Another would be is the experts that they used and previous administrators of schools they talked about. The last thing that I can think of is why did they only use certain school. They chose large universities that are well know, why not pick a small school that this problem also affects, I get that at these large school sexual assaults happen a lot more then at a smaller school, but why not also show that side?
